When you think of success, do you picture growth at all costs? Or does it look more like freedom, balance, and building something meaningful? For Summer Allen of Winterport, Maine, success has never been one-size-fits-all. Her journey from growing up in a family shoe business to becoming a trusted business consultant is packed with lessons for entrepreneurs who want to take control of their own story.
From Winterport Roots to Business Owner
Summer grew up in Winterport, Maine, where her father owned the Winterport Boot Shop for over 50 years. Retail wasn’t just part of the community—it was part of her DNA. She laughs that her first job was napping in a playpen in the back room, before becoming a runner fetching coffee and shoes.
Like many young Mainers, Summer wasn’t sure exactly where her path would take her. After earning a degree in Environmental Management from the University of Maine, she worked in restaurants, research centers, and administrative roles before discovering her passion for entrepreneurship. With encouragement from mentors, family, and support from the Eastern Maine Development Corporation (EMDC), she opened Valentine Footwear—a women’s shoe store in downtown Bangor.
Building a Business That Put People First
What started as “a job for herself” quickly became a community favorite. Summer knew her store wasn’t just about shoes—it was about creating a place where relationships mattered most. For more than a decade, Valentine Footwear became a go-to destination where customers felt seen, supported, and valued.
Then came 2020. Like countless Maine small business owners, Summer had to pivot during COVID. She embraced creativity—hand-painted windows, personal thank-you notes, even a memory wall—but foot traffic wasn’t the same. Instead of letting the market define her story, she chose to write her own ending. On January 7, 2023, she closed Valentine Footwear with no debt and only seven pairs of shoes left on the shelves. To her, that was success.
Launching Valentine Consulting Partners
Closing her shop wasn’t the end—it was the beginning of something new. Today, Summer runs Valentine Consulting Partners, where she helps other entrepreneurs across Maine (and beyond) redefine success on their own terms.
Too often, business owners:
- Feel guilty about closing or downsizing
- Think growth is the only measure of success
- Struggle to balance sustainability with personal well-being
Summer’s mission? To help leaders honor their own goals, take control of their narrative, and build businesses that fit their lives—not the other way around.
The Power of Community in Entrepreneurship
Summer continues to mentor with Maine Center for Entrepreneurs (MCE) and connects through local peer networks like Tuesday Forum. Her philosophy is simple yet powerful:
“Surround yourself with people who support you, no matter what. The right community changes everything.”
At UpStart Maine, we believe the same thing—entrepreneurship thrives when rooted in community. Summer’s story reminds us all that success doesn’t have to mean scaling big, going national, or burning out. Sometimes, success looks like balance, joy, and knowing when to turn the page.
