Lessons from Blitz: How One Conversation Sparked a Community Idea

At UpStart Maine, we believe entrepreneurship isn’t just about building businesses—it’s about building community. Every spark of innovation starts with connection, collaboration, and sometimes… a simple conversation over coffee. Or in this case—hot cocoa.

Last week at the UpStart Maine Blitz Conference, something incredible happened. What began as a panel on navigating economic volatility turned into a heartfelt movement that’s already making a local impact.

From Business Insights to Community Action

During our panel, “Navigating Volatility in a Shifting Economy,” one of our guest speakers, Sarah Marble Morneault, co-owner of Tiller & Rye in Brewer, Maine, shared her powerful story about running a mission-driven business in uncertain times.

Afterward, we stepped aside for what we thought would be a quick chat about the event. Instead, the conversation shifted—from market trends to something much closer to home: families right here in our community who don’t have enough to eat.

At that moment, the spark happened.

Within minutes, Sarah and I—two moms, two entrepreneurs—pulled out our calendars and said, “Let’s do it.”

And just like that, Hot Cocoa for a Cause was born.

📅 Saturday, November 15
🕚 11 AM – 2 PM
📍 Tiller & Rye, Brewer, Maine
This community pop-up fundraiser is hosted by my son, Dorian (aka D-Max). At just 13 years old, he’s already raised thousands through creative projects like lemonade stands, cereal drives, and apple cider pop-ups.

Now, he’s teaming up with Sarah to make sure the Brewer Food Pantry can keep its shelves—and its lights—on this winter.

What Makes This Event So Special

At UpStart Maine, we believe entrepreneurship and empathy go hand in hand. Every small business leader, maker, and dreamer has the power to lift others up.

This event isn’t just about cocoa—it’s about connection. It’s about turning simple ideas into real, tangible change.

Here’s why it matters:

  • Local impact: 100% of donations go directly to support families through the Brewer Food Pantry.
  • Youth leadership: D-Max proves that age doesn’t define action—heart does.
  • Community collaboration: Entrepreneurs, families, and friends working side by side to strengthen our local economy and support system.
  • Shared purpose: Every cup of cocoa is a reminder that we’re better together.

Why Community Sparks Innovation

When people come together with open minds and shared goals, creativity thrives. That’s exactly what the UpStart Maine Blitz Conference is all about—turning ideas into action.

Whether it’s launching a startup, growing a small business, or finding new ways to serve the community, the best ideas often come from unexpected places.

Hot Cocoa for a Cause is proof: a casual conversation can grow into a movement that warms hearts and fills pantries.
