From Orrington to Sports Innovation: Meet Athlume Founder Sam Lander

If you’ve ever wondered how a Maine native can take a spark of curiosity and turn it into a potential game-changer in college sports, Sam Lander’s journey is a story worth knowing. Born and raised in Orrington, Maine, Sam has always been driven by opportunity, athletic passion, and a keen eye for innovation. Today, he’s building Athlume, a cutting-edge startup poised to transform the world of college athletics through data, automation, and AI.

The Early Years: How Maine Shaped a Sports Innovator

Sam’s love for sports started young. He played hockey at John Bapst, immersed himself in athletic events, and later earned a degree in kinesiology from the University of Maine. Those formative years weren’t just about competition—they were about understanding athletes, the challenges they face, and how systems can be improved to support them.

During college, Sam worked closely with student-athletes, gaining firsthand experience in athletic training and event support. But it was when he pursued his MBA with a concentration in Business Analytics (Class of 2025) that he discovered a critical gap in college sports infrastructure: while athletes and teams had talent, the tools to manage compliance, data, and analytics effectively were missing.

Finding Opportunity in NIL and College Sports

While collaborating on a research project with Dean O’Reilly, Sam interviewed college athletes about Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities. These conversations revealed a striking need: colleges, conferences, and athletes lacked the underlying infrastructure to fully benefit from the new NIL era.

From this insight, Athlume was born. Sam envisioned a vertically integrated data ecosystem that could serve as the backbone for college sports operations, connecting vendors, automating compliance, and integrating AI to streamline processes. In short, Athlume is building the future infrastructure of college athletics, a multi-billion-dollar market poised for growth.

Building a Team and a Vision

Launching a company like Athlume requires more than just a great idea—it requires a dedicated team and strategic guidance. Sam has already assembled a core team of six professionals with deep experience in sports, tech, and AI, along with seven interns ready to support development and growth.

To accelerate this journey, Sam turned to UpStart Maine, leveraging mentorship, strategic support, and connections to the broader entrepreneurial ecosystem in Maine. “Surround yourself with a great team and trust your instincts,” he says. “If your idea is really that great, the customers will show up.”

Key Lessons for Maine Entrepreneurs

Sam’s story isn’t just about sports innovation—it’s about courage, action, and resourcefulness. Here are some takeaways for aspiring founders in Maine:

  • Start before you’re perfect: Don’t wait for every detail to be finalized. Jump in, test, iterate, and evolve your idea based on real market needs.
  • Separate yourself from your product: Critiques are about your business, not your worth. Take feedback constructively, and keep moving forward.
  • Leverage local networks: Maine has a thriving entrepreneurial community. Connecting with programs like UpStart Maine can provide mentorship, accountability, and critical introductions.

Build a strong team: A great idea needs a team that complements your strengths and shares your vision.
